Christian Wück appointed as new head coach of Germany's women's national team

Wück replaces Martina Voss-Tecklenburg after eight years in charge; First task is to help Germany retain their World Cup title next summer

Following their quarter-final exit at this summer's European Championship on home soil, the German Football Association (DFB) has appointed Christian Wück as the new head coach of their women's national team, replacing Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.

Wuck, 54, has been unveiled on a one-year deal until 2024 and will take charge of his first match in September when Germany host Sweden in a friendly in Duisburg.

The former Germany international defender, who won 12 caps for his country, has spent the last six years in charge of the DFB's Under-20 women's team and is now tasked with helping Germany retain their Women's World Cup title next summer in Australia and New Zealand.

"It is a great honour for me to be appointed as head coach of the Germany women's national team," said Wück.

"I would like to thank the DFB for their trust and support. I am fully aware of the responsibility that comes with this role and I am determined to do everything possible to help the team achieve success on the international stage."

"Our immediate goal is to win the Women's World Cup next year. We have a talented squad and I am confident that we can achieve great things together."

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf added: “Christian Wück is an experienced and successful coach who knows our players and our philosophy well.”

"He has a clear plan for the team and I am convinced that he is the right person to lead us to the Women's World Cup title in 2023."

Voss-Tecklenburg departs after successful eight-year spell

Voss-Tecklenburg stood down after eight years in charge of Germany, having led them to the 2016 Olympic gold medal, the 2019 Women's World Cup quarter-finals and the 2022 European Championship quarter-finals.

The 55-year-old, who won 125 caps for Germany as a player, guided the team to 104 wins, 15 draws and 12 defeats in 131 matches.

She said: "I am proud of what we have achieved in the past eight years. We have won a major tournament, reached the semi-finals of another major tournament and qualified for three World Cups and three European Championships."
