Zverev Overcomes Second Vienna Hurdle – Paul and Tiafoe Out
Zverev Cruises Into Quarterfinals
Alexander Zverev kept his hopes of reaching the final of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna alive with a dominant performance, defeating former world number three Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4.
The German, who is aiming for his second title in the Austrian capital, was too strong for his opponent throughout, breaking Thiem's serve twice in each set.
Zverev will now face either Tommy Paul or Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, after both Americans advanced with victories on Wednesday.
Paul and Tiafoe Advance
Paul booked his place in the last eight with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win over Karen Khachanov, while Tiafoe defeated Lorenzo Sonego, 6-3, 6-4.
Both matches were tight, but Paul and Tiafoe's power and consistency proved too much for their opponents in the end.
Djokovic Withdraws
In other news, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament due to a hamstring injury he sustained in his quarterfinal victory over Daniil Medvedev on Tuesday.
The world number one was due to face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals, but will now be replaced by lucky loser Filip Krajinovic.
Other Results
In other results from Wednesday's play, Andrey Rublev defeated Jannik Sinner, 6-2, 6-4, and Matteo Berrettini rallied past Hubert Hurkacz, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Rublev and Berrettini will now face each other in the quarterfinals.
