Williams Racing Announces New F1 Driver
Albon to Replace Latifi in 2023
Alex Albon will join Williams Racing as its new Formula 1 driver for the 2023 season, replacing Nicholas Latifi. The announcement was made by the team on Thursday.
Albon, a Thai-British driver, has previously raced for Red Bull and Toro Rosso in Formula 1. He was dropped by Red Bull at the end of the 2020 season but returned to the team as a reserve driver in 2021. He replaced Sergio Perez at the 2022 Australian Grand Prix when Perez tested positive for COVID-19.
Latifi has been with Williams since 2020 but has struggled to make an impact in Formula 1. He has scored just seven points in his two seasons with the team and has been outqualified by his teammate, George Russell, on every occasion.
Albon's signing is a significant coup for Williams, who are looking to improve their performance in 2023. The team finished last in the constructors' championship in 2022 and will be hoping that Albon can help them move up the grid.
Albon said he was "excited" to join Williams and was looking forward to the challenge of helping the team improve. "I'm really excited to be joining Williams Racing for the 2023 season," Albon said. "It's a team with a rich history and I'm looking forward to helping them move up the grid. I'm confident that we can have a successful season together."
Williams Racing team principal Jost Capito said he was "delighted" to welcome Albon to the team and was confident that he could help them achieve their goals. "We are delighted to welcome Alex to Williams Racing for the 2023 season," Capito said. "He is a talented driver with a proven track record in Formula 1. We are confident that he can help us achieve our goals and we are looking forward to working with him."
