Trojans, American football, and Sustainability
USC Football and Sustainability
The University of Southern California (USC) Trojans football program has been a leader in sustainability efforts, and recently the program has been recognized for its leadership on and off the field, becoming the first in the nation to earn LEED Platinum certification for its athletic facilities.
The Trojans' Heritage Hall athletic facility has been cited by the U.S. Green Building Council for its green building strategies, including a solar energy system, a water-efficient irrigation system, and a green roof. The facility was also designed to be energy-efficient, with a high-performance building envelope and energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
USC Football and Leadership in Sustainability
John Dennis, the director of football operations for the Trojans, said that the program is committed to sustainability and that the LEED Platinum certification is a testament to that commitment as the first football program in the nation to achieve this certification.
USC Trojans' Commitment to Sustainability
The Trojans' commitment to sustainability is not limited to their athletic facilities. The university has also made a commitment to sustainability in its academic programs, research, and operations. In 2008, USC became the first university in the nation to have a sustainability officer, and the university has since developed a number of sustainability initiatives, including a climate action plan, a green building program, and a sustainable transportation program.
The Trojans' commitment to sustainability is a model for other universities and athletic programs. By demonstrating that it is possible to be both successful and sustainable, the Trojans are helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future.
