TSE approves the filing of an offense report against former President for allegedly spreading disinformation

Supreme Electoral Court reported that there are "indications of possible crimes" by the former president.

The case concerns the Bolsonaro's dissemination of false information about the electronic ballot boxes.

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) approved, this Thursday (22), the filing of an offense report against the former president of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The decision was taken by the rapporteur of the case, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who understood that there are "indications of possible crimes" practiced by Bolsonaro.

The case in question concerns the dissemination of false information about electronic ballot boxes by the former president. Bolsonaro repeatedly made unfounded claims that the machines were susceptible to fraud, even though there is no evidence to support these allegations. Moreover, the former president also encouraged his supporters to carry out anti-democratic acts, such as demonstrations calling for a military intervention.

In his decision, Minister Moraes highlighted the seriousness of Bolsonaro's actions. The minister stated that the dissemination of false information about the electoral process can undermine confidence in the institutions and constitute a threat to democracy. Moraes also pointed out that Bolsonaro's conduct is in violation of several electoral laws, such as the prohibition of electoral propaganda that contains false or misleading information.

With the approval of the offense report, the Public Prosecutor's Office will now be responsible for investigating the case and filing a charge against Bolsonaro. If convicted, the former president may be sentenced to up to five years in prison. The PGR also highlighted the importance of holding accountable those who spread false information about the electoral process.

The filing of an offense report against Bolsonaro is a significant development in the fight against disinformation in Brazil. The decision sends a clear message that those who spread false information about the electoral process will be held accountable. It is hoped that this will help to restore confidence in the institutions and strengthen democracy in the country.
