Prep football: Oxford handles its business early in win over Huffman
Chargers snap three-game losing skid with efficient performance
OXFORD - Even without star running back Jamari Smith, the Oxford Chargers were able to handle their business in impressive fashion Friday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Dylan Orr rushed for a career-high 151 yards and a touchdown as Oxford rolled to a 43-19 victory over Huffman to snap a three-game losing streak.
Oxford (3-3) got off to a fast start, scoring touchdowns on its first three possessions. Orr's 68-yard run put the Chargers up 7-0, and he added a 3-yard scoring run to make it 14-0.
Huffman (0-6) got on the board with a 33-yard field goal by Emmanuel Adjei, but Oxford answered right back with a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard TD run by quarterback Trent Seaborn.
Oxford's defense was also impressive, holding Huffman to just 215 yards of total offense. The Chargers forced two turnovers, including a fumble recovery by linebacker Weston Stephens that led to a 25-yard field goal by Brant Law.
The Chargers also got a big play from their special teams unit when Jaylen Ward returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown to give Oxford a 37-13 lead in the third quarter.
Huffman's only touchdowns came on a 6-yard run by Braylen Parker in the second quarter and a 5-yard pass from Parker to Adjei in the fourth quarter.
With the win, Oxford moves into a tie for second place in Region 3-6A with a 2-1 record. The Chargers will host Benjamin Russell next Friday night.
