Germany To Transform Coal Mine Into Oasis With Crystal-Clear Lakes
A former brown coal mining area will soon be transformed into a stunning recreation area with crystal-clear, turquoise lakes.
The transformation of the Garzweiler II opencast mine in western Germany will create a unique landscape with opportunities for swimming, sailing, and other activities.
The project, which is set to begin in 2023, will involve flooding the former mining pit with groundwater, creating three lakes covering an area of around 2,300 hectares (5,700 acres).
The largest of the lakes will be over 90 meters (295 feet) deep and will be the deepest lake in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The lakes will be surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and meadows, providing a beautiful setting for recreation and relaxation.
The transformation of the Garzweiler II mine is part of a larger plan to phase out coal mining in Germany and transition to renewable energy sources.
The project is expected to create around 3,000 jobs and boost the local economy.
Once completed, the recreation area will be one of the largest and most unique in Germany, attracting visitors from around the world.
