Explosion Injures Israelis in Jerusalem
Jerusalem Attack Injures Numerous People
At least 18 people were injured in a bus explosion in Jerusalem on Wednesday, medics said, with Israeli police calling it a terrorist attack.
The blast went off near a bus stop on the main highway in the Givat Shaul neighborhood, entered through a checkpoint into the city from the annexed West Bank.
Medics said 14 people were taken to hospital, while four were treated at the scene.
Israeli police said a bomb was planted on the bus and detonated, though they provided no further details.
The blast was the second explosion in Jerusalem in less than a week.
Last Wednesday, one person was injured in a bomb blast outside the Jerusalem Central Bus Station.
Israeli police are still investigating
Police said they were still investigating the attack.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Hamas praised the attack and said it was a “natural response” to Israeli “crimes”.
The Palestinian militant group, which rules the Gaza Strip, has a history of carrying out attacks in Jerusalem.
In a statement, Hamas said the attack was “a legitimate response to the crimes of the occupation and its settlers against our people and our sanctities”.
The attack came as tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been rising in recent weeks.
Israeli forces have conducted several raids in the occupied West Bank, killing at least 10 Palestinians.
The raids have been met with protests from Palestinians, who have clashed with Israeli forces.
