The upcoming Cologne Carnival – Finally again after a long break
Cologne rejoices: After a two-year break due to the corona pandemic, the Cologne Carnival is finally taking place again in 2023. From February 16 to 21, the city on the Rhine will be transformed into a sea of joy and exuberance. We reveal everything you need to know about the upcoming mega-event.
The opening of the Carnival
The Cologne Carnival traditionally begins on Weiberfastnacht (February 16). At 11:11 a.m., the three Cologne fools (Nubbel, Bauer und Jungfrau) storm the city hall, seize power in the city for a week and receive the key to the city from the mayor. For all women present, this is the start signal to cut off men's ties as a symbol of the seized power – but watch out: Legend has it that every woman who cuts off a tie will receive a kiss from the owner.
The highlights of the Cologne Carnival
In addition to the opening of the carnival, the women's carnival on Weiberfastnacht itself is an absolute highlight. The men, on the other hand, have their day on “Altweiber”, the Thursday of the carnival. In addition to the street carnival with its many parades, there are also countless carnival sittings in halls. The highlight on Rosenmontag (February 20) is the big parade with over 10,000 participants and around 12,000 sweets that are thrown into the crowd in a good mood.
Tips for visiting the Cologne Carnival
Anyone who wants to experience the Cologne Carnival should definitely book their hotel in advance, as capacities are scarce, especially during the main carnival days. It is also advisable to arrive early on the day of the parade, as all vantage points are usually occupied quickly. In addition, you should wear warm clothes, as the weather in February can be capricious. Of course, suitable carnival clothing should not be missing. And most importantly: Don't forget to have fun!
The motto of the Cologne Carnival 2023
Every year, the Cologne Carnival has a different motto that serves as a guide for costumes and decorations. The motto of the 2023 Carnival is "Two hearts, three cheers, Alaaf!"
