Greens politician Cem Özdemir and Baden-Württemberg's Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann honored the anti-fascist resistance fighter Karl Schabrod on Saturday in Stuttgart. Schabrod, who died in 2022 at the age of 96, was a member of the resistance group "Red Orchestra" during the Nazi era and was imprisoned in concentration camps.
In his speech, Özdemir praised Schabrod as a "role model for democracy and human rights" and emphasized the importance of remembering the fight against fascism. Kretschmann also paid tribute to Schabrod's commitment and called him a "great democrat".
Schabrod was born in Stuttgart in 1926 and joined the "Red Orchestra" resistance group in 1942. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and sentenced to death. However, the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. Schabrod was liberated from the Dachau concentration camp in 1945.
After the war, Schabrod was active in the peace movement and the Greens party. He was also a member of the Stuttgart city council and the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.
In 2018, Schabrod was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services to democracy and human rights.
