Bomb in Erkelenz: Evacuation within a 400-meter radius
The situation
On Thursday morning, a 10-hundredweight bomb from World War II was found on the premises of the Erkelenz vocational college. The bomb was discovered during construction work on the school grounds.
The bomb disposal service was called in and is currently preparing to defuse the bomb. As a precaution, the area within a 400-meter radius of the bomb has been evacuated.
The evacuation
The evacuation area includes the vocational college, the Berufskolleg, the Berufskolleg, and several residential buildings. Around 1,000 people are affected by the evacuation.
The evacuees have been asked to gather at the nearby sports hall, where they will be provided with further information.
The defusing
The bomb disposal service is currently preparing to defuse the bomb. The defusing process is expected to take several hours.
Once the bomb has been defused, the evacuation order will be lifted and residents will be able to return to their homes.
