Annaberg-Buchholz: 34-Year-Old Man Missing in Silver Mine
Missing Person: Search Continues
A 34-year-old man has been missing since Saturday while searching for minerals in an old silver mine at the Pöhlberg, south of Annaberg-Buchholz. "We have been searching since Saturday evening, but there is still no trace of the missing person," said police spokesman Andrzej Rydzik on Monday.
Frauenstein Mine Search
The search, involving 220 people including mountain rescue, police, fire brigade, and mine rescue, has been hampered by the difficult terrain and the risk of collapse within the mine known as "Vereinigt Feld im Fastenberg."
Abandoned Mine Dangers
The mine was closed in the mid-19th century. "The shafts are partially flooded, and the mine is very unstable. The risk of cave-ins is too high for us to continue searching," explained Mine Director Uwe Steinkopf.
Official Statement
Annaberg's mayor, Rolf Schmidt, expressed his sympathy for the family and announced that the search would be discontinued due to the excessive risk to rescuers.
Safety First
"It is a sad decision, but the safety of the rescue workers has priority. We cannot risk their lives," said Schmidt, adding that the city would continue to support the family.
Hopeful Conclusion
The family of the missing man remains hopeful that he will be found alive. However, the chances of survival after several days in such a hazardous environment are渺茫.
